BLM to Host National Public Lands Day Events in Royal Gorge Area

CANON CITY, Colo. – Help the Bureau of Land Management’s Royal Gorge Field Office celebrate the 20th anniversary of National Public Lands Day by volunteering for a project this fall. National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands.
“National Public Lands Day is a great opportunity to get involved with your public lands,” said Keith Berger, Field Manager for the Royal Gorge Field Office. “Volunteering is a great way to spend the day with the family and do something good for the land that belongs to you.”
There are numerous opportunities for volunteers to choose from in the Cañon City vicinity this year. Volunteers are asked to wear sturdy shoes, gloves, hats and sunscreen; and to bring plenty of water.
September 21: Midland Hill Trail, Buena Vista: The BLM recently finished a trail re-route on the Midland Hill Trail, and needs your help to rehabilitate the old trail. RSVP to Linda Skinner 719-269-8732 or lskinner@blm.gov.
September 21: Cleveland Dinosaur Quarry clean up: Volunteers are needed to help paint, pull weeds and clean around the Cleveland Quarry pull-off on Garden Park Road. This project will clean up the area in preparation for the Garden Park National Natural Landmark expansion ceremony on October 16. RSVP to Melissa Smeins at 719-269-8523 or msmeins@blm.gov.
September 21-22: Join the Rocky Mountain Field Institute for the 21st annual Shelf Road volunteer weekend. This project involves restoring and improving access to the climbing walls at one of the most popular sport climbing areas along the Front Range. October 5-6: Join Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado as they help construct a new trail at the newly expanded Garden Park National Natural Landmark. Work involves new trail construction with some rock work. You can volunteer for one day or both, and overnight camping is available. All meals are provided. Volunteers must register with VOC online atwww.voc.org, or by calling VOC at 303-715-1010.
