BLM Eastern States and Washington Office employees participated in a 5K Run/Walk to raise awareness and needed funds for the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). The event was held December 12, 2014 and followed a blustery route along the Anacostia River on a bright winter day in the Nation's capital city.

The participants contributions and additional funds collected from those who sponsored individual runners and walkers totaled $4,246.00 and will be donated to the CFC charities selected by the individuals who participated in the fund raiser. Darrell Burrell, BLM Eastern States CFC Chair, coordinated this event which garnered enthusiastic support and was expanded to include participation by Washington Office employees. BLM Eastern States Office and Washington Office employees enjoyed the opportunity to join together for an important cause. Burrell said, “We wanted to plan an event so everyone could get out and get some exercise together, while they supported causes that were important to them."

The 5K began at the corner of a busy downtown intersection where the BLM Eastern States Office is soon to be co-located with the WO. Before getting underway, all participants gathered for a safety briefing by Bill Forbes, BLM ES Safety Manager. The route passed by the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball Park and followed the Anacostia River walk, past the historic Navy Yards and the USS Barry (DD-933) museum ship. The route looped through a park behind the Department of Transportation building and finished back at 20 M Street Southeast. John Ruhs, BLM ES State Director, appreciated the effort of all those who participated by having a good time while doing good for others. He said, “What a fantastic way to show support for all of the wonderful CFC charities."
