(BELLE FOURCHE, S.D.) – The Bureau of Land Management will burn slash piles in Meade and Lawrence counties this winter as weather conditions permit.

Local authorities will be contacted by the BLM prior to any burning taking place. Smoke will likely be visible at times and will be monitored to minimize impacts to sensitive areas.

The piles of non-marketable timber and debris are located on the Fort Meade Recreation Area near Sturgis and near the Englewood and Wilderness Estates subdivisions south of Lead. Crews will ignite these piles in stages once there is enough snow cover and when weather conditions are favorable.

These piles are the byproduct of projects undertaken to reduce the threat of wildfire, to improve wildlife habitat and to reduce Pine beetle infestation.

For additional information call the South Dakota Field Office at 605-892-7000.
