Bureau of Land Management Director Tracy Stone-Manning has announced the selection of Jeffrey Krauss as the new Assistant Director for Communications. Krauss, a veteran communications professional with more than 25 years of experience, will assume his new position on August 27, 2023, at BLM Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

“Jeff’s strategic leadership in communications and deep understanding of the BLM will play a central role in our ongoing efforts to provide clear and compelling information to the American people. We are excited to have him join the leadership team,” said Stone-Manning.

As the BLM’s Assistant Director for Communications, Krauss will oversee BLM’s national strategic communications efforts for four divisions, including public affairs and digital media, congressional affairs, regulatory affairs and policy directives, and external and intergovernmental affairs. This includes oversight of Freedom of Information Act and Resource Advisory Councils, as well as the BLM Foundation liaison. He will also lead storytelling efforts to convey complex public lands policies and actions to the American people and partners nationwide.

Over the past six years, Krauss has served as BLM’s Deputy Assistant Director for Communications, where he was responsible for management and oversight in the areas of public affairs and new media, legislative affairs, regulatory affairs, correspondence, international affairs, external affairs, intergovernmental affairs, citizen advisory committees and FOIA responsibilities.

Prior to that, Krauss was the Division Chief for the BLM’s External and Intergovernmental Affairs, with responsibility for coordinating with governors, counties, state and local governments, and other stakeholder organizations as well as managing incoming and outgoing congressional, gubernatorial, public and other priority correspondence. Krauss began his BLM career as a seasonal forestry technician in Missoula, Montana and joined the BLM full time in 1997.

Krauss left Federal service for two years to serve as the External Affairs Director at the National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) where he developed and executed a national strategy to maximize NOIA’s outreach to governors, state legislators, business officials, manufacturers, and agribusiness leaders. Prior to working for the federal government, Jeff worked in sports communications for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and NBC Sports covering the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Krauss served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Jamaica as well as an AmeriCorps team leader in Charleston, South Carolina. Krauss earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from the University of Tennessee and enjoys canoeing, hiking and fishing in his spare time.
