Subject:    Process for Editing Geospatial Allotment Boundaries

Program Area:   Rangeland Management 

Purpose:  To transmit the State’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for maintaining and updating Range Allotment geospatial data.

Background:  The existing statewide geospatial Range Allotment data was compiled from a data call in 2000 from CA-IM-2000-040.  Since then, there was no programmatic way for Field Offices to update this data and most Field Offices have either kept their own copy up to date, or not made any updates at all.  The data submitted in the original data call was incomplete, often did not include pasture boundaries, and were often inaccurate.

This IM sets policy and makes available specifically defined procedures and direction for maintaining range allotment geospatial data in the state.  The data is maintained in a Spatial Data Engine (SDE) Geodatabase which allows for multi-user versioned editing.  Edit jobs are created, tracked, and managed through Job Tracker (see links listed below), and edits that are performed through ArcMap.  The statewide dataset will be periodically posted to the National Data Set which can be accessed by the public through the Bureau’s Geocommunicator at www.geocommunicator.gov.
 
Policy/Action:  The general step-by-step procedures follow:  Basic geospatial edit skills are required by the Geospatial Information System Operator.  These skills can be acquired through Resources, including the Virtual Campus training (see link #1 below). Real-time one-on-one support will also be available as needed.  Please make prior arrangements with the Lead Editor (see link #2, the edit guide). 

Edit rights to the data must be acquired before editing.  New editors should use the Bureau’s Remedy Help Desk System to request edit access to California’s Range Allotment GIS Data Set.

Editors must understand and should review the Range Allotment edit procedures which are found at link #2 listed below. After edits are completed, they must be submitted and reviewed by the lead editor for quality assurance and quality control.  Once approved edits are reconciled and posted, edits will be available for use within 24 hours.
