Current Statewide Fire Restrictions

The Nevada State Office has issued a statewide Fire Prevention Order for all public lands, roads, and trails it manages, under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (43 U.S.C. 1701 et seq.) and 43 CFR 9212.0-6. Under this order, the public is prohibited from:

  • possessing, discharging, or using fireworks, pyrotechnics, or incendiary devices,
  • possessing, discharging, or igniting explosives or explosive material, including binary explosive targets,
  • discharging a firearm loaded with tracer, incendiary, or steel-component ammunition (tracer/incendiary rounds are always prohibited on public lands),
  • operating a combustion engine without a properly installed, working spark arrester.

Keeping a shovel, fire extinguisher, and at least 5 gallons of water on hand is recommended in case of an unintentional fire start.

Exemptions apply to permit holders authorized for the specific act, on-duty federal, state, or local officers and firefighting personnel, and Tribal members engaged in traditional or cultural activities requiring privacy (43 CFR 9212.2).

Violations may bring civil liability or criminal prosecution, including Class A misdemeanor charges under 43 U.S.C. 1733(a) and 18 U.S.C. 3559, with fines up to $100,000 and/or up to 12 months imprisonment under 18 U.S.C. 3571. Violators are also liable for fire suppression and damage costs.

Southern Nevada District

Current restrictions in place:

The Fire Prevention Order addresses wildfire safety measures for use of campfires outside of developed campgrounds and complements state and local wildfire prevention laws, regulations and activities. Effective Friday, May 29, 2026, through October 31, 2026, the public is required to follow these criteria before building, attending, maintaining, or using a campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove, outside of a developed campground:

  • No target shooting, hot bullet fragments, exploding targets and metal from recreational shooting can spark a wildfire. The use of tracer, incendiary, or steel-component ammunition is prohibited. Visit www.wheretoshoot.org for alternative recreational target shooting locations.
  • No campfires, briquette/charcoal barbeques, or stove fires are allowed outside of a developed fee campground or picnic area, except portable stoves using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel.
  • No smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or a three-foot diameter area clear of brush and all flammable materials.
  • No welding, metal grinding, or operating an acetylene or other torch with open flame.
  • No parking or operating vehicles or motorized equipment over or on top of dried/cured vegetation.
  • Possessing, discharging, or using fireworks, pyrotechnic, or incendiary devices is prohibited.
  • Possessing, discharging, igniting, or causing to burn explosives or explosive material, including binary explosive targets, is prohibited.

In addition to district-specific orders, the BLM Nevada State Office has issued a statewide fire prevention order in effect on all Nevada public lands from 12:01 a.m. May 1, 2026 through October 31, 2026, unless rescinded:

  • Possessing, discharging, using, or allowing the use of fireworks, pyrotechnic, or incendiary devices is prohibited.
  • Possessing, discharging, igniting, or causing to burn explosives or explosive material, including binary explosive targets, is prohibited.
  • Discharging a firearm using tracer, incendiary, or steel-component ammunition is prohibited; use of tracer or incendiary ammunition is always prohibited on public lands.
  • Operating or using any internal or external combustion engine without a properly installed, maintained, and functioning spark arresting device is prohibited.
  • Persons involved with the requirement of privacy for Tribal activities for traditional or cultural use are exempt from this order.
