Event Description
Casper, Wyo. – As a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, one of the most famous expeditions in American history, John Colter was one of the better hunters and routinely sent out alone to scout the surrounding area. Colter is best remembered for his explorations during the winter of 1807 and 1808, when he became the first known European to discover the regions which later became known as Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks.
Colter really became an iconic figure during the year of 1809 when he and his companion, John Potts were captured by Blackfeet Indians. Potts was killed, but Colter was spared and given a chance to live by outrunning hundreds of braves. He was literally “running for his life.” This presentation on August 9 at 1 p.m. by NHTIC volunteer Eric Johnson will showcase the story of this run.
