Temporary closure at BLM’s Challis Bridge Recreation Site for access improvements in central Idaho
Event Description
CHALLIS, Idaho—The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will temporarily close the Challis Bridge Recreation Site, which is comprised of nine acres of BLM-managed public land about three miles south of Challis, off U.S. Highway 93 from May 5-16, 2025. The entire area will be closed to vehicles and foot traffic to minimize the risks to visitors during construction to upgrade access to the recreation site. The improvements will include building up and leveling the access road and parking lot, plus new water crossings to help withstand flooding and ice events.
“We are excited to see the coming improvements that will enhance the recreation experience,” said BLM Acting Challis Field Manager David Hilliard. “The improvements will make the site more resilient to seasonal weather stresses and save taxpayer money in the long run.”
The Challis Bridge Recreation Site is popular with families and picnickers, plus easy access to the Salmon River is enjoyed by many anglers and boaters. A grove of cottonwoods surrounds the site, offering shade from the summer sun, plus the site has restrooms, picnic tables with grills, and a boat ramp.
Law enforcement and emergency services will be allowed access during construction. The temporary closure may be lifted ahead of schedule, if construction activities are completed sooner than expected. For more information about the temporary closure, please contact BLM_ID_ChallisOffice@blm.gov or call 208-879-6200.
