Judith Peak prescribed fire begins today
LEWISTOWN, Mont. – Bureau of Land Management fuels program specialists started burning woody material today in the Judith Mountains.
The Judith Peak pile burn unit is located along the road system leading to Judith Peak, about 10 miles northeast of Lewistown, Montana, within the BLM Lewistown Field Office administered area.
Ignition operations are expected to continue throughout the week as conditions allow. Smoke may persist for several days after ignition is complete and may be visible from Lewistown.
These piles were created during the development of a fuel break project in the summer of 2024, covering an area of approximately 167 acres.
The objective of this fuels-treatment project is to reduce conifer fuel loading, create a fuel break to protect communications infrastructure located on Judith Peak, and support any future wildfire suppression efforts.
North Central Montana District fuels program staff plan to conduct prescribed burning of up to five woody pile units throughout the winter months, as fuel moisture and weather conditions allow. Read the BLM’s Nov. 25 announcement for details.
