Improved Public Access Ahead: Temporary Cave Gulch Road Closure for Safety Upgrades
MISSOULA, Mont. — To provide safer, more reliable access for visitors, the Bureau of Land Management’s Missoula Field Office will temporarily close Cave Gulch Road from Sept. 14–25, 2026, while crews complete essential maintenance. Once finished, the upgraded roadway will offer smoother travel, improved drainage, and better long-term access to public lands.
“This temporary closure is an important step to ensure the long-term safety and accessibility of Cave Gulch Road. These repairs will address existing damage to the road, including wash boarding and erosion, so that the public can continue enjoying safe, reliable access to their public lands for years to come,” said Erin Carey, BLM Missoula Field Manager.
Heavy equipment will be operating in the area, and the closure is intended to prevent public hazards and for the protection of recreationists. The BLM will post notices at available turnaround points, along with reader boards documenting project activities, along Bear Gulch Road and Garnet Range Road and maps of the affected area will be available at the Missoula Field Office.
Cave Gulch Road provides high-clearance vehicle access from Interstate 90 to Garnet Ghost Town along county and BLM managed roads. During the closure, alternative access is available via Highway 200 and the Garnet Range Road
