“There’s something special about heading outdoors to find your own holiday tree,” said Angela Bulla, BLM Lakeview’s Deputy District Manager. “It’s more than just decorating—it’s about creating memories with family, enjoying the beauty of public lands, and bringing a little adventure home for the holidays.”
Tips for a safe & joyful tree-cutting adventure
- A valid permit is required to cut/remove trees from BLM lands. (Note: U.S. Forest Service permits differ in price and rules.)
- No topping trees. Cut below the lowest live limb—leave stumps no higher than six inches.
- Avoid damaging nearby trees.
- Drive only on existing roads. Park safely without blocking traffic. Respect road closures.
- Do not trespass on private land.
- Some areas may be inaccessible after snowfall—early-season cutting is recommended.
- Be prepared: check road and weather conditions, dress warmly, and pack food, water, and safety gear. Let someone know your plans.
- If stranded, stay with your group and vehicle until help arrives.
- Dispose of trees responsibly—consider composting or repurposing as firewood.
- Hunting seasons may be open—wear bright colors for visibility.
