Fire restrictions ease across parts of western Colorado
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management eased fire restrictions across parts of western Colorado as seasonal conditions continue to improve.
The Colorado River Valley and Grand Junction field offices reduced fire restrictions from Stage 2 to Stage 1 effective Sept. 4. The White River Field Office reduced restrictions from Stage 1 to no additional seasonal restrictions effective Aug. 31.
For visitors, the changes mean more flexibility when enjoying public lands, but they do not mean wildfire prevention rules go away. Under Stage 1 restrictions, campfires are allowed only in agency-provided fire grates at developed campgrounds and recreation sites. Fire pans and rock campfire rings do not qualify. Other activities, including smoking, chainsaw use and welding, also remain subject to specific fire-safety requirements.
In the White River Field Office, the end of seasonal restrictions means visitors return to the standard year-round wildfire prevention rules. Those rules prohibit leaving a fire unattended or unextinguished, using fireworks, and several other activities that can create a wildfire.
Visitors should check current fire restrictions before heading outdoors and remember that conditions can change quickly. Never leave a campfire unattended and make sure it is completely out and cold to the touch before leaving.
The BLM reminds visitors that preventing wildfires is a shared responsibility. By following fire regulations and taking a few extra precautions, the public can help protect Colorado’s public lands, communities and the people who live and work in them.
