Bureau of Land Management Invites Public to Hike to Alleged UFO Skip Site
Event Description
LINCOLN COUNTY, N.M. – The Bureau of Land Management’s Roswell Field Office invites the public to a hike to the Alleged UFO Skip Site near Corona on July 5 at 10 a.m. The site is the place where some people believe an unidentified flying object containing aliens crashed near Corona in July 1947, starting nearly 80 years of debate. The hike is a Freedom 250 event to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary this year.
Participants will meet at the at the parking lot for the skip-site trailhead along Lincoln County Road B007, also called Transwestern Road. The geographic coordinates are: 33.952189, -105.331214. Traveling from Roswell, participants will find the route that takes U.S. Highway 285 to New Mexico Highway 247 to Lincoln County Road B007 the easiest. This route avoids possible GPS missteps and has the shortest amount of time on a gravel road. Visitors will walk about 3.5-mile round trip to the alleged skip site and back. Organizers expect the hike will take about two hours. To learn more about the site, please visit https://www.blm.gov/visit/alleged-ufo-skip-site.
Fort Stanton – Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area Manager Warren Kasper, who will lead the hike, said, “The Roswell Field Office manages 1.5 million acres of public land, and one of the purposes we manage the land for is recreation, so this is an opportunity to experience an off-beat place that has had a lasting ‘impact’ on pop culture.”
Hike participants should wear sturdy close-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing and should bring water. No previous hiking experience is necessary, and the hike is suitable for all ages. BLM staff will provide educational and interpretive experiences during the hike.
The Roswell Field Office plans more Freedom 250 events throughout the year and will make more announcements in the weeks leading up to events. Freedom 250 is the national, nonpartisan organization leading the celebration of our nation’s birthday. Events will take place around the country that honor our history, showcase the beauty of the United States, ignite innovation, and strengthen the faith that will carry our nation forward for the next 250 years.
