CRAIG, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management has amended a temporary public land closure in the Emerald Mountain area near Steamboat Springs as fuels reduction work moves into its next phase.

Beall Trail is now open to the public, along with a portion of Ridge Trail. Temporary closures remain in place on portions of Ridge and Rotary trails while crews use mechanical mastication equipment to reduce vegetation and wildfire fuels.

The equipment can throw rocks, wood and other debris up to 300 feet, so the temporary closures are necessary to keep visitors a safe distance from active operations.

Work is expected to continue through Oct. 20, weather and equipment conditions permitting. Visitors should check the updated closure map, follow posted signs and stay out of areas where mechanical work is underway.

The project is part of a collaborative fuels reduction effort between the BLM and Colorado State Forest Service to improve forest health and reduce vegetation that could contribute to wildfire intensity.
