BLM Roswell Field Office Invites Public to Lava Lookout Hike

CARRIZOZO, N.M. – The Bureau of Land Management’s Roswell Field Office invites the public to a “Lava Lookout Hike” at 10 a.m. on Oct. 3. Participants will meet at the at the Valley of Fires Recreation Area. The hike is a Freedom 250 event to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday this year.
The guided hike will take in the sights and sounds of the recreation area as visitors walk about two miles along the Kipuka Trail. The trail, a gentle dirt path, meanders through the interior of the "Kipuka," an island of soil and vegetation encircled by the lava flow. The trail provides a unique experience as it takes visitors off the concrete path and into the diverse wildlife of the Chihuahuan Desert. Organizers expect the hike will take about 90 minutes.
Hike participants should wear sturdy close-toed shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and should bring water. No previous hiking experience is necessary, and the hike is suitable for all ages. BLM staff will provide educational and interpretive experiences during the hike.
The Lava Lookout Hike is the last scheduled Roswell Field Office Freedom 250 event. Freedom 250 is the national, nonpartisan organization leading the celebration of our nation’s birthday. Events will take place around the country that honor our history, showcase the beauty of the United States, ignite innovation, and strengthen the faith that will carry our nation forward for the next 250 years.
