Ely, Nev. — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District will conduct prescribed burning of slash piles and scattered slash on public lands from January 14 through April 2026, weather and fuel conditions permitting. Treatments will take place on the Ward Terraces, Ward Bench, South Steptoe Valley, Duck Creek, Long Valley, and areas surrounding the Mount Wilson community.

These activities are part of ongoing, multi-year land and watershed restoration efforts designed to reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat, and lower the risk of catastrophic wildfires in the Wildland Urban Interface.

“These carefully planned operations are key to long-term landscape resilience and public safety,” said Fire Management Specialist Jacob Keogh.

Firefighters will monitor burn sites until the piles are consumed or extinguished. Smoke may be visible during burning operations and in the following days.

All operations will only occur under approved weather, fuel, and air quality conditions. No short-term closures or access restrictions are expected.

The BLM Ely District appreciates the public’s cooperation as these important restoration projects move forward.
