BLM Plans National Public Lands Day Cleanup Event Near Roswell

ROSWELL, N.M. — The Bureau of Land Management Roswell Field Office is celebrating National Public Lands Day by inviting volunteers to help clean up sections of the office’s 240-acre Oxbow Recreation Area near Roswell. 

BLM personnel will meet volunteers at 9 a.m. Sept. 12, at the parking lot on Tijeras Road off U.S. 380, and the event will take place until 11 a.m. The event location is about seven miles east of the City of Roswell. The geographic coordinates are: 33.39791, -104.39115. Participants should wear hats, boots, sunscreen and bug repellant. The BLM will provide trash bags, gloves, water and snacks.

“We are excited to host this event at our newest recreation area, which is along the Pecos River and close to Roswell,” said BLM Roswell Field Office Manager Chuck Schmidt. “It provides an opportunity for people to discover their public land and make a difference to improve the area. Having people volunteer alongside others who appreciate the great outdoors not only makes a great morning, but it leaves a long-lasting benefit to our environment.”

“National Public Lands Day is a great opportunity to help protect and enhance our amazing natural resources,” said Outdoor Recreation Planner Blake Ingram. “We truly appreciate the work and time of volunteers.” 

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest, single-day, volunteer event for public lands. Established in 1994, and held annually on the fourth Saturday in September, the event brings together thousands of volunteers to help restore and improve public lands around the country. This year’s theme is "Caring for our Shared America," which emphasizes that what we share, we must also care for together.
