LANDER, Wyo. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Lander Field Office has officially opened the Atlantic City and Big Atlantic Gulch campgrounds in South Pass for the season. Due to a below‑average snowpack and a drier‑than‑normal spring, the area is accessible earlier than usual — well ahead of the typical early‑June opening.

Cottonwood Campground on Green Mountain is not yet open while the BLM finishes hazard tree removal and conducts drinking water testing. When the campground opens, trailers will not be allowed due to a culvert washout. BLM recognizes this facility as being very popular with the public and is working diligently to make necessary repairs. An update on campground repairs and opening date will be posted when plans are finalized.

BLM encourages the public to enjoy recreational opportunities on public lands and reminds visitors to comply with all motorized travel restrictions within the Lander Field Office area. Several areas in the Lander Field Office are closed to motorized travel or remain seasonally closed to protect natural and cultural resources. Detailed access information is available at: https://edit.blm.gov/sites/blm.gov/files/Lander_FO_PublicLandUserLimitations.pdf.

The link includes a map that identifies:

  • Seasonal closures to human presence

  • Seasonal motorized and mechanized closures

  • Year-round motorized vehicle closures

  • Other access limitations

In all other areas, motorized vehicle use on public land is limited to roads and existing two-tracks. Cross-country (off-road) travel is not allowed. Please, do not travel in wet or muddy conditions. Traveling over wet or muddy ground causes considerable resource damage, road damage, and dangerous situations.

Operating off-highway vehicles (OHVs) is a great way to enjoy public lands. OHVs must be registered. To purchase an OHV permit and to learn more about the registration program, visit http://wyotrails.state.wy.us/ or call the Wyoming State Trails Program Office at 307-777-6323.

For more information on closure areas or any spring recreation-related questions, please contact BLM Outdoor Recreation Planner Michael Coyne at 307-332-8400 or [email protected].
