LAKEVIEW, Ore. — With wildfire danger increasing across south-central Oregon, the Bureau of Land Management's Lakeview District has enacted a Fire Prevention Order restricting fire-related activities on BLM-managed public lands effective 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, and continuing until rescinded.

The order prohibits building campfires, smoking in vegetated areas, off-road driving, chainsaw use during peak afternoon hours, and other fire prone activities except in specific, designated areas. These precautions are aimed at reducing human caused wildfires during the dry, high-risk months of summer.

“This order is critical for protecting public lands, natural resources, and local communities,” said Todd Forbes, Lakeview District Manager. “We're asking everyone to do their part to prevent wildfires, these small steps can make a big difference.”

What’s Prohibited:

  • Campfires, charcoal grills, and stove fires, except in designated campgrounds.
  • Smoking, except in vehicles or areas at least six feet from vegetation.
  • Driving off-road, vehicles must stay on cleared roadways and park in areas free of vegetation.
  • Operating vehicles on BLM lands without fire tools: a shovel, an axe, and a full water container or fire extinguisher.
  • Chainsaw use is prohibited between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.; fire tools and a one-hour fire watch are required when operating chainsaws.
  • Use of combustion engines or electric tools near vegetation unless equipped with spark arresters or a safe clearance zone.
  • Welding and open flame torches are prohibited.

Portable stoves and fire pits fueled by liquid or bottled gas are allowed if used in areas cleared of flammable material (minimum six feet of clearance).
