Event Description
The Bureau of Land Management will offer a public tour of the Sutherland off-range wild horse corrals on Sep. 24. Attendees will get a tour of the facility, observe the wild horses cared for there, and learn about the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program.
Tours will be available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the 3890 North 4000, West Sutherland. Attendees should dress for the weather and wear sturdy, close-toed shoes.
“We are committed to protecting animal welfare and providing humane care and treatment to all wild horses and burros within our facilities,” said Gus Warr, chief of the BLM Utah Wild Horse and Burro program. “Animals in our charge continue to be cared for and protected by the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, even after they are removed from the range.”
The Sutherland facility is privately-owned and is one of the five different locations in Utah that provide care to wild horses and burros removed from the range.
The facility encompasses approximately 30 acres, containing 27-plus holding pens in various sizes, and can provide care for up to 1,500 wild horses. The horses receive abundant feed tailored to their needs each day, along with a constant supply of fresh water through automatic watering troughs. Free choice mineral block supplements are also provided to each animal. A veterinarian routinely inspects the horses and provides medical care, as needed.
BLM strives to place wild horses and burros removed from public lands into good, private homes. Animals at the Sutherland facility are made available to the public for adoption or purchase throughout the year at off-site adoption and sale event locations, such as the BLM Delta, Utah facility, and others across the country.
For more information on the upcoming tour at Sutherland please contact the Sutherland Facility Manager Trent Staheli at 435-558-5679.
