BLM to burn Lawrence County slash piles
BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. — The BLM South Dakota Field Office will take advantage of recent snowfall to burn previously-staged slash piles in Lawrence County as soon as possible.
The piles are located near Hearst, Englewood, Sugarloaf Mountain, Sheeptail Gulch, Nevada Gulch and Stage Run.
Local authorities will be contacted by the BLM prior to any burning taking place.
Crews will only ignite piles when they are confident that snow cover will remain for several days. Smoke will likely be visible and will be monitored to minimize impacts to sensitive areas.
Personnel will monitor and check the piles for several days after they have been lit. These piles are a byproduct of proactive BLM projects undertaken to reduce the threats or impacts of wildfire, to improve wildlife habitat and reduce Pine beetle infestation.
For additional information call the South Dakota Field Office at 605-892-7000.
