BLM Authorizes Right-of-Way to Reconstruct, Modernize Natural Gas Facilities
KEMMERER, Wyo. — The Bureau of Land Management has authorized right-of-way grants supporting the modernization of an existing natural gas compressor station near Kemmerer, helping maintain reliable natural gas delivery through a regional pipeline system while replacing aging equipment with newer, lower-emitting technology.
The Kemmerer Compressor Station is part of the Northwest Pipeline, a roughly 4,000-mile natural gas transmission system serving the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West. The modernization is designed to improve system reliability by reducing maintenance outages and downtime while significantly reducing nitrogen oxide and potential methane emissions at the facility.
The grants authorize Northwest Pipeline LLC to reconstruct the existing Kemmerer Compressor Station, replacing aging equipment with two new natural gas-fired turbine compressor units.
Compressor stations help maintain the pressure needed to move natural gas through pipelines. The reconstructed facilities will remain within the existing 80-acre right-of-way, with approximately seven acres of temporary workspace used during construction. Following construction, Northwest Pipeline will demolish the existing compressor facilities and reclaim areas disturbed by the work.
The BLM completed an environmental review under a categorical exclusion and determined that no extraordinary circumstances with potentially significant environmental effects apply to the project.
