BLM approves wild horse and burro management plan for Blue Wing Complex
WINNEMUCCA, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management today approved the plan for how wild horses and burros will be managed within the Blue Wing Complex in Pershing County.
Located approximately 65 miles northeast of Reno and spanning nearly 1.2 million acres, the complex includes the Blue Wing Mountains, Kamma Mountains, Lava Beds, Seven Troughs, and Shawave Mountains herd management areas as well as the Selenite Range, Antelope Range, Trinity Range, Truckee Range, and Eugene Mountains herd areas.
The environmental assessment analyzed the direct, indirect, and cumulative effects of implementing the herd management area plan, including gathers, fertility control, and water source development.
“The plan includes a range of options for long-term management of wild horses and burros while maintaining the population within the appropriate management level over multiple years,” said Humboldt River Field Office Manager, C. John Mitchell.
Additional information, including the environmental assessment, is available at the BLM National NEPA Register.
