Bioblitz at Agua Fria National Monument
Event Description
The Bureau of Land Management’s Agua Fria National Monument welcomes volunteers to participate in a one-day bioblitz on May 31. A bioblitz is a citizen-science effort to record and identify plant and animal species in a designated area in a short time. Participants do not need botanical or wildlife experience to participate.
Scientists and naturalists will lead groups focused on different types of plants or animals and will be available to assist with species identification. The event will utilize the iNaturalist app to record findings. Learn more about the event at the Agua Fria National Monument Bioblitz page.
Participants should be prepared by bringing plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat. Some locations may require a high-clearance vehicle. The bioblitz is a partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, Arizona Game and Fish Department, the Arizona chapter of The Wildlife Society, and Friends of the Agua Fria National Monument. Data collected during the bioblitz will be used to further environmental analysis and planning efforts on the monument and surrounding area.
Participants of all skills and abilities are welcome to participate. Interested participants can register by contacting Wildlife Biologist Damon Haan at [email protected] or 480-404-0767.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Agua Fria National Monument. The monument was established in 2000 by presidential proclamation, which recognized the monument for its abundant wildlife and its extensive human history.
