Event Description
Have a telescope collecting dust because you're not sure how to use it? Thinking about getting one but don't know where to start? This beginner-friendly workshop at Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum is a great place to learn.
Experienced amateur astronomer Dani Long will walk participants through the basics of setting up and using a telescope, including how to align a finderscope, understand different eyepieces, care for your equipment, and get the most from a night under the stars. Bring your own telescope if you have one, and you'll get hands-on help with your specific setup. If you don't own a telescope yet, a few will be available to use during the workshop.
Held during the afternoon, the workshop gives participants a chance to clearly see each part of the telescope while learning how it works. You'll leave with practical tips, answers to your questions, and a handout featuring night sky objects to look for on your own.
Instructor Dani Long has spent more than 25 years working on public lands in southwest Colorado in roles ranging from archaeologist and wildland firefighter to fire lookout and museum collections technician. A lifelong stargazer, she enjoys helping people discover that astronomy is something anyone can enjoy, regardless of experience.
