2025 Outside Lake Pleasant HMA Nuisance Wild Burro Gather
Purpose of Gather:
The purpose of the gather is to remove nuisance burros that are damaging private property and creating a public safety hazard.
Details of Gather:
The Bureau of Land Management will conduct a gather of up to 460 wild burros on state, local, and private lands outside the Lake Pleasant Herd Management Area in the Lake Pleasant area northwest of Phoenix.
As of April 29, a 15% (60 head) overage was approved and then accepted by the contractor. Planned gathered and removed is now 460.
The burros will be gathered via bait trapping, water trapping, or both. Temporary traps on state trust lands or private land will be set up and monitored. Upon completion of efforts, BLM personnel will remove all equipment and bait used during the gather. This is not a drive trap gather; a helicopter will not be utilized in gather operations.
Public Observation:
There will be no public viewing opportunities for this gather due to the nature of the gather.
Adoption Information:
Animals removed from the Lake Pleasant HMA will be made available for adoption or purchase at Florence Wild Horse and Burro Training and Off-range Corral through the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption and Sales Program.
Background:
The BLM manages free-roaming wild horses and burros on public lands as part of its multiple-use mission, with the goal of supporting healthy wild horses and burros on healthy public rangelands. The BLM is responsible for determining and maintaining appropriate management levels (AML) for each herd and works to achieve that population target through a variety of management processes, including limiting reproduction in some herds through the use of birth control and gathers that remove excess animals from the range.
