BUFFALO, Wyo. – Beginning Monday, May 8, the Bureau of Land Management will temporarily close roads within the Weston Hills Special Recreation Management Area for roadwork. Construction is expected to take three weeks to complete. Roads located on U.S. Forest Service and State of Wyoming managed lands will remain open during this time.

The closure will affect nearly 5 miles of roads on BLM-managed lands beginning at the BLM’s “Weston Hills Special Recreation Management Area” sign. Work will entail road blading, filling ruts and potholes, building water bars, and re-gravelling. The project will improve the surfacing and drainage of the road to address ongoing rutting and erosion issues. Additionally, an approximately 100-foot segment of redundant and extremely eroded road will be reclaimed.

Located roughly 25 miles north of Gillette, the Weston Hills Recreation Area is managed jointly between the BLM and U.S. Forest Service. The area is particularly popular for four-wheeling because of its extensive trail network and terrain. Due in part to its popularity, roads within the area experience extensive erosion and rutting.
