CARLSBAD, N.M. –The Bureau of Land Management’s Carlsbad Field Office invites the public to provide comments on a draft, comprehensive framework for future public land management actions in southeastern New Mexico.  The planning area under the proposed framework consists of about 6.2 million acres of land within a three-county area.  This includes about 2.1 million acres of public surface lands and nearly 3.0 million acres of federal minerals estate, managed by the BLM Carlsbad Field Office.

The Draft Resource Management Plan and its associated Draft Environmental Impact Statement will guide the management of these public lands for the benefit of current and future generations as part of BLM’s multiple-use mission.  The planning effort will update management decisions for public land uses and resources, including energy development, minerals, livestock grazing, and access.  When complete, the revised management plan will replace the 1988 Carlsbad Resource Management Plan, and its amendments.

The draft plan will analyze and update the BLM’s management of public lands in Eddy and Lea counties, and a portion of Chaves County.  The 90-day public comment period will begin August 3, with the publication of a Notice of Availability in the Federal Register.

Copies of the Draft RMP/EIS are available for review at the following BLM offices:
