BLM announces temporary closures at Black Rock Desert playa
Winnemucca, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management is temporarily closing a portion of the Black Rock Desert playa for the annual Burning Man event from July 24 through Oct. 5. The goal is to protect public resources, improve public safety, and enable BLM law enforcement to support state and local law enforcement.
There are two phases of the temporary closure order:
- Phase 1 will close about 9,941 acres (less than 3% of the playa) from July 24 through Aug. 16 and again from Sept. 6 through Oct. 5.
- Phase 2 will close about 51,149 acres (33% of the playa) from Aug. 17 through Sept. 5.
The remainder of the Black Rock Desert playa will remain open to dispersed recreational use.
The Black Rock Field Office has posted signs and distributed maps detailing restrictions. This information is available at main entry points around the playa, the Winnemucca District Office, the Black Rock Visitor Center, and the Black Rock Field Office website.
