Powder River Basin Initiative
An Approach to Restoring Sage-Grouse Habitat within the Powder River Basin
The High Plains District Office is in the initial stages of planning the Powder River Basin Initiative (PRBI). The goal of the PRBI is to integrate the habitat improvement programs and projects implemented by the Conservation Districts the Natural Resource Conservation Service, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, and Northeast Wyoming Sage-Grouse Local Working Group in conjunction with the BLM’s coalbed natural gas (CBNG) abandonment program and to leverage funding and interagency and operation coordination for the purpose of enhancing sage-grouse habitat reclamation.
BLM is in the process of forming a consortium of landowners, industry, and agency partners who will integrate their respective habitat improvement programs with BLM efforts focused on reclamation of abandoned CBNG wells. Currently the Lake DeSmet Conservation District has expressed the most interest in participating.
