BLM Seeks Comments on EA for Wind River/Bighorn Basin District Portion of
August 2012 Oil and Gas Lease Parcels

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public comment on the environmental assessment (EA) for the Wind River/Bighorn Basin District portion of the August 2012 oil and gas lease parcel offering.

The initial list of parcels derived from public nominations within the Wind River/Bighorn Basin District contains 295 nominated parcels, totaling approximately 526,469 acres. Twelve parcels (8,541.24 acres) are located within the Cody Field Office (CYFO), 242 parcels (458,874 acres) are within the Lander Field Office (LFO) and 41 parcels (59,053 acres) are within the Worland Field Office (WFO). They are offered in compliance with the Grass Creek Resource Management Plan (RMP) Record of Decision (ROD) approved in 1998, the Washakie RMP ROD approved in 1988, the Cody RMP ROD approved in 1990 and the Lander RMP ROD approved in 1986.

The draft EA is available online at: Three alternatives are analyzed: under Alternative 1 (no action alternative), no parcels would be offered for sale; under Alternative 2, all 295 nominated parcels would be offered for sale with no recommended deferrals; and under Alternative 3 (proposed action alternative), 32 parcels containing approximately 32,270 acres would be offered for sale and, if sold, a lease issued (seven parcels containing 5,681 acres in the CYFO, six parcels containing 3,960 acres in the LFO and 19 parcels containing 22,629 acres in the WFO).

Public comments are an important component of the National Environmental Policy Act process and help identify issues, concerns, and mitigation opportunities not covered in the EA. Individual respondents may request confidentiality.
