BLM Invites Public to Proposed Desolation Road Gas Well Field Trip
 in Monument Valley

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rock Springs Field Office invites the public on a field trip, Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, to the proposed “Desolation Road Unit” 31-28 gas well site in the Monument Valley Special Management Area.

The site is approximately 1.5 miles north of the Adobe Town Wilderness Study Area (WSA) boundary. The site is not within the WSA, which is off limits to drilling. The site is located in Section 28, Township 16 N., Range 96 W., on BLM managed land.

Samson Resources Co. also proposes to drill a second well on private lands, located in Section 21, Township 16 N., Range 96 W. The mineral rights for the second parcel are owned by Anadarko Petroleum Corp. Although this second site is not part of the federal action, Samson and the BLM are offering a visit to the private location to apprise the public of the other well.

BLM Rock Springs Assistant Field Manager John MacDonald said, “Because of the interest expressed by the public, we wanted to have this field trip so people could see firsthand what is being proposed and get their input. We’ve been working closely with Samson to minimize impacts to this area.”

Participants will leave at 8:00 a.m. from the Rock Springs Field Office located at 280 Highway 191 N. It is highly recommended that people joining the caravan drive or ride in high clearance vehicles with four-wheel drive. The trip is expected to take a minimum of six hours including the two hours planned for review of the locations. No amenities will be provided so participants should bring warm clothing, sturdy footwear, lunch and plenty to drink.

Public comments are welcome during the field trip, or may be submitted in writing to BLM Rock Springs Field Office, 280 Highway 191 N., Rock Springs, WY 82901, or email Rock_Springs_Wymail@blm.gov. Please include "Desolation Road Unit" in the subject line.

The public comment period ends Dec. 30 and the application process will continue even if the field trip is cancelled due to inclement weather. When providing comments, the writer's name and address may become part of the public record. For more information, call John MacDonald 307-352-0238.
