Downtown Newcastle, Wyoming.

Location: Newcastle is located at the junction of Highway 16 and Highway 85 in Northeast Wyoming, on the southeast edge of the Black Hills. Surrounding communities include Lusk (81 miles south), Wright (69 miles west), Sundance (46 miles north), Upton (26 miles northeast), Gillette (78 miles northwest). Rapid City, SD, is 78 miles east.

Housing: Rentals and homes for sale are available.

Major Employers: Kennecott Energy Company; Wyoming Refining Company, Dixon Brothers Trucking; Public School District #1, Weston County Hospital and Manor Nursing Home; Weston County, US Government (BLM, USFS,) and the State of Wyoming Honor Farm. Newcastle is the seat of Weston County government.

Major Industries: Open-pit coal mining; bentonite mining; oil & gas development, ranching, tourism, recreation, and government.

Medical Services: Newcastle is serviced by a Weston County Health Services, providing a 17-bed hospital and a primary care clinic (staffed by three MD's and three PA's), a Home Health Agency, Home Oxygen Service, and the Weston County EMS. Life Flight helicopter and Air Med service to Casper is available for critical care situations. A 24-bed skilled nursing center (Manor Nursing Center) is also attached to the hospital. Mondale, an assisted living center for Seniors is also available.

Schools & Library: Local education facilities include pre-school, Kindergarten through High School (with an excellent aquatic center available to the public), an Outreach program for Eastern Wyoming College and the University of Wyoming, and the Weston County Public Library. A new High School and Elementary School were built in 2002.

Population: Approximately 3500.

Recreation: Newcastle offers indoor and outdoor archery ranges, outdoor shooting range, outdoor tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, swimming pool, several parks, baseball and soccer fields and children's playgrounds. Hunting, fishing, camping, backpacking, biking, boating, a variety of children's activities and clubs, hiking, ice fishing, museum, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling on over 335 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, wildlife viewing and rockhounding. Keyhole Reservoir (about 54 miles north on Highway 16), Pactola Reservoir, Deerfield Reservoir and Sheridan Lake (all three approximately 50 miles into South Dakota) and Angastora Reservoir (approx 100 miles southeast in South Dakota) provide fishing and boating opportunities. Weston County is rich in history, scenic beauty and abundant wildlife with several loop tours that offer distinctive opportunities for sightseeing.

Taxes: Sales 5%, State Income and personal property tax none. Residential property at assessed at 9.5% of market value, and industrial property is assessed at 11.5%.

Weather: Summer temperatures are usually in the low 80's with occasional afternoon thunderstorms. Average rainfall is about 18" per year. The growing season is approximately 95-115 days long. The average winter daytime temperature is about +28F. Temperatures can fall to -40F, but cold temperatures don't feel as cold due to the very low humidity. Average monthly snowfall from December March is 24".

Newcastle Field Office: Oil and gas activity and rangeland management are significant parts of the field office workload. The staff is currently involved in protection and management of the Whoopup Canyon ACEC and several coordinated resource management efforts to improve land health issues.
