Public Input and Review Opportunities

Rapid Ecoregional Assessments
REAs synthesize existing science about resource conditions and trends within an ecoregion. They do not make management decisions or allocate resource uses. Instead, REAs provide information and tools for land managers and stakeholders to consider in subsequent resource planning and decision-making processes.

Because REAs are science assessments, they will undergo a science peer review process overseen by the U.S. Geological Survey, rather than a public comment process. However, opportunities for public input are being provided at the initiation of the REA process, when the important management questions that guide the REA are being formulated.  In addition, the REAs’ interim memos and final reports are being posted for public information and use.

Opportunities for Public Input

  • When a REA is initiated, the public can provide input on a REA’s draft management questions. The management questions are available in Task 1 for each REA in the Memos and Reports section on the REA Documents page.

Access to REA Documents

  • The interim memos prepared during a REA are posted on the REA Documents page as they become available.
  • The REA final reports are posted on the REA Documents page after data quality and external peer reviews are completed and the report is officially released by the BLM. 
The BLM’s Proposed Landscape Approach
The proposed landscape approach is a management concept that is currently being developed and refined by the BLM, in consultation with public land stakeholders. Specific public involvement opportunities will be identified and provided as the proposal evolves.

The BLM, with the assistance of the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution, has prepared a Lessons Learned Report , which examines prior landscape-level management efforts by the BLM and its land management partners. The report will be used to help shape a landscape approach that complements local management and fosters effective management actions on-the-ground.
