Nancy Lewis

Artist Nancy Lewis lives in Palisade, Colorado, where the magnificent light and color of the high-desert landscape influences her art. Looking at her work, the viewer will experience her energy and sense of expression through her use of vivid colors, impressionist style and composition.

Nancy was a BLM Artist-in-Residence at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah, during the summer of 2013. She explains that being outside while painting "en plein air," or in the open air, “allows me to experience a total immersion of a moment in time and discover a whole universe of different lines, shapes, light, shadows, reflections and textures. Using these elements to create a two dimensional image from a three dimensional reality both inspires and challenges me at the same time.” When asked what medium she prefers she replies "I love mixing the rich colors of oils, the color intensity of pastels and the luminosity of watercolor. The medium I use depends on the subject matter and the impressionistic image I wish to create.”

Self-supported travel by bicycle is a true passion for Nancy. She has traveled over 15,000 miles with her compact drawing kit, capturing the unique landscape and culture she experiences along the way. Do not be surprised to see Lewis’ art in unusual places throughout the United States, Canada, Central America, South America and Europe.

After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Cleveland Institute of Art, Nancy headed west to find her fame and fortune. Colorado became her home state where she started her graphic arts career as a drafter both by hand and later by computer. But the lure of her true love of painting and creating art won out. Currently her home is in Western Colorado where she paints full time, teaches workshops and art classes as well as showing her watercolors, pastels and oil paintings in art exhibits and galleries.
