River Flow Information
During the season, river flow information can be obtained by calling 801-539-1311 or accessing the USGS internet site:  RIVER FLOWS.  Flows as low as 900 CFS are adequate for most uses.
River Difficulty:  Desolation is rated a Class II/III but remember that the river does not know that.  To see how rivers are rated and what it means to you click here:   RIVER RATING DIFFICULTY.  The area is extremely remote - small incidents = BIG PROBLEMS.  Open canoes are not recommended.  Open canoes will swamp at any water level.
Services:  There are NO water or garbage facilities at the remote Sand Wash Ranger Station.  The nearest gas and phone services are in Myton, 40 miles to the north.  Primitive campsites, toilets, and a visitor information station are available near the launch site.  Trash dumpsters are provided at Swaseys Rapid.  Please do not dispose of human waste or garbage in the toilets near Swaseys Rapid.  An aluminum can collection bin will be available at Swaseys; please crush, separate, and deposit your cans in the bin for recycling.  Funds from recycling will be used for the benefit of the Desolation Canyon River program.
