North Fork Sun River WSA

Values

The North Fork Sun River WSA lies at the base of Castle Reef and is characterized by rolling hills, open terrain and occasional trees.   The WSA provides habitat for a variety of upland wildlife species including, grizzly bears, and wolves, deer and bighorn sheep.  Recreational opportunities include solitude and primitive recreation.

Visitation

The North Fork Sun River WSA is located approximately 20 miles northwest of Augusta, Montana.  Travel west from Augusta, MT on the Sun Canyon Rd to the Helena Lewis and Clark NF boundary.  Turn right on the Pishkun Canal Rd and travel approximately one half mile to Forest Road 8984.  Turn left on Forest Road 8984 and drive one tenth of a mile to the parking location.  From the parking location, you have to hike north approximately one and a half miles along the forest boundary to reach the southern edge of the WSA. There is no motorized access to the WSA. 

Visitor Advisory

Access roads are gravel and require a suitable clearance vehicle. Road conditions can change at any time due to weather. Visitors must possess knowledge and skill in cross country hiking and navigation. Private property surrounds the majority of the WSA. Please review land ownership maps, respect private land postings, and do not trespass.
