Subject: Timber Production Capability Classification Spatial Data Standard Version 3.0

This Information Bulletin announces the availability of, and describes the recent updates to, the Timber Production Capability Classification (TPCC_POLY) Spatial Data Standard Version 3.0.

The Timber Production Capability Classification (TPCC) dataset represents areas of BLM managed lands in Western Oregon that are classified according to the physical and biological capability of the site to support and produce forest products. The purpose of TPCC is to determine whether forest lands are capable of producing timber on a sustained-yield basis and are suitable for planned timber management.  TPCC is based upon the site’s capability to produce wood fiber, not on the vegetation currently occupying the site.  This data was generated from a variety of data sources over a relatively long period of time.

The following changes were applied:

  • Conversion of cryptic codes to real words
  • Simplification of domain names
  • Addition of field aliases
  • Change of the name of the feature class from TPC_POLY to TPCC_POLY
  • Drop fields: PC_SUBTYPE, FRAG_CD1, FRAG_CD2, RFST_CD1, RFST_CD2
  • Add fields LAND_BASE_CAT, FRAG_COND_YN, RFST_COND_YN, BLM_ORG_CD, GIS_ACRES
  • Rename PRI_CLASS, and PRI_MGT
  • Added appendices to describe TPCC symbols
  • Added “SYU” code to DOM_TPC_OPTN

This data standard is effective immediately and to be followed for all TPCC geospatial data, as specified in the Data Standard document.

Following release of this IB, dataset themes that are described by the data standard will be made available in corporate data repositories: ORSOEDIT and ORSOVCTR. Following the availability of the data in those locations, additional publications and layer files as prescribed by the standard will be updated or created.

Existing datasets and publications of the prior data standard version (TPC_POLY) will remain in place where possible until November 30, 2021, when they will be removed from all corporate locations and archived. This should provide ample time for updates to layer files, map templates, scripts or code, and processes that reference these datasets.

The draft data standard was issued for internal review and comment prior to this IB.  To see comments and responses of that review, contact the State Data Administrator, Eric Hiebenthal, at 503-808-6565, or by email at ehiebent@blm.gov.

Questions about this data standard can be directed to Carolina Hooper, State Data Steward, at 503-315-5927; Craig Ducey, Technical Lead, at 503-808-6314; or Eric Hiebenthal, State Data Administrator, at 503-808-6565.
