Information Bulletin No. OR-2021-039

To: Deputy State Directors, District Managers, and Branch Chiefs
From: Branch Chief, Information Resources Management
Subject: Administrative Units Data Standard Version 1.0

This information bulletin (IB) announces the availability of the new Administrative Units (ADMU) Spatial Data Standard. This replaces and supersedes the Resource Area Boundaries (RAB) Spatial Data Standard.

The ADMU data standard contains requirements for spatial depiction and attribution of administrative boundaries within the Oregon/Washington (OR/WA) Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The OR/WA BLM State Office jurisdiction consists of Districts sub- divided into Field Offices.

The dataset includes boundary lines depicting official BLM District boundaries, as approved by the Washington Office, and those depicting administrative BLM Field Office boundaries, as approved by the OR/WA BLM State Director, where the boundary lines are not coincident with the official District line.

The ADMU data standard is responsive to and extends the national BLM data standard for Administrative Units (ADMU). The OR/WA ADMU data are made available for inclusion into the national dataset on a regular basis or for specific data calls.

Use this data to depict the Administrative Units on maps. Use the polygons created from the data for various analytical purposes, including clipping data and calculating acreage A derived layer handles modification of the boundary for cartographic display (smoothing of convoluted coast or river lines).

Following release of this IB, dataset themes that are described by the data standard will be made available in corporate data repositories: ORSOEDIT and ORSOVCTR. Following the availability of the data in those locations, additional publications and layer files as prescribed by the standard will be updated or created.

Existing datasets and publications of the RAB data standard will remain in place where possible until September 30, 2021 when they will be removed from all corporate locations and archived. This should provide ample time for updates to layer files, map templates, scripts or code, and processes that reference these datasets.

The draft data standard was issued for internal review and comment prior to this IB. To see comments and responses of that review, contact Eric Hiebenthal, State Data Administrator, at 503-808-6565, or by email at

Any questions about this data standard can be directed to Corey Plank, State Data Steward and Technical Lead for Administrative Units, at 503-808-6145; or Eric Hiebenthal, State Data Administrator, at 503-808-6565.
