Environmental Management System (EMS)

An Environmental Management System (EMS) provides a recursive process for identifying and improving environmental impacts.

The OR/WA BLM is committed to implementing an EMS in order to:

  • Comply with Federal, State and local environmental laws and regulations.
  • Prevent pollution.
  • Incorporate environmental considerations into decision making.
  • Institute a continual improvement cycle of planning, implementing, and reviewing, to establish and meet environmental goals.

OR/WA BLM EMS focus areas (Aspects) include:

  • Sustainable Operations
    • green purchasing
    • waste prevention, recycling, reuse
  • Facility Operations
    • energy management and conservation
    • water management and conservation
    • waste prevention, recycling, reuse
  • Fleet Operations
    • fuel management
    • hybrid vehicles

The EMS mechanism for evaluating and pursuing environmental management improvements uses International Standards Organization (ISO) guidelines which require:

  • Conducting regular audits and management reviews.
  • Welcoming, tracking, and responding to both internal and external input.
  • Developing annual objectives and targets in areas of focus.
  • Gathering statistics and measuring progress toward objectives.
  • Identifying and taking corrective action when targets are not met.
  • Providing EMS awareness training.
  • Providing training pertinent to specific environmental goals.
  • Maintaining an on-going record of goals, accomplishments, reviews, audits, and training.
