An online launch permit is required year-round and available here to boat all sections of the Mainstem downstream of Spray. Permits to boat upstream of Spray are encouraged and available here and at launch points. The number of launch permits issued in 2017 will not be limited, so it is not necessary to obtain your permit until close to your launch date. Once issued, don't forget to confirm your permit between 10 and 30 days prior to your trip. Permit fees are non-refundable.

Fire Danger

In the John Day River canyon, the combination of dry cheat grass, strong canyon winds, and steep terrain is a recipe for high fire danger, where one mistake can quickly erupt into a major wildfire.

Due to high fire danger, campfires and charcoal fires are not permitted from June 1st to September 30 each year. An annual fire closure notice is issued each spring closing the river corridor to all fires and restricting smoking. Example of John Day River Fire Closure Notice For 2015 Season (PDF)
