This map is a graphic depiction of the five special areas created by the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Area Act of 2000. On October 30, 2000 the Act was signed into law, providing additional protection to approximately 900,000 acres of Federal land in Oregon. The Act is the culmination of a cooperative effort between Oregon's Congressional delegation, Oregon's Governor, and the U.S. Secretary of the Interior to forge legislation that will provide long-term protection to the cultural, economic, ecological, and social health of the Steens Mountain Area. The purpose of this map is to enhance understanding of the scope and size of the Act in the Southeastern Oregon landscape. The map base is a grid composite created by Corey Plank. The border graphic was created using Corel Draw, exported as a CGM file, and then plotted onto the map body in ArcPlot.
