Interagency Fire Management Team hosts Dispatch Center Open House

ELKO, Nev. – Have you ever wondered what it’s like to coordinate resources on a wildland fire? Want to know how resources are ordered? Or maybe just get a closer look at wildland fire engines and equipment?

The Northeast Nevada Interagency Fire Management Team is offering the chance to get a closer look at what it takes to command and control wildland fire operations. On Friday, June 14, from 3 until 5 p.m., the Elko Interagency Dispatch Center will be open for guided tours where visitors will get a firsthand look at the process for fighting wildland fires from the initial report, ordering resources and dispatching personnel and equipment. Engines from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and Nevada Division of Forestry will be on hand with crews available to explain firefighting techniques and equipment. The Dispatch Center is located at 725 Aspen Way in Elko, near the offramp from Interstate 80 exit 301 eastbound.

“It takes a community to prepare for and survive a wildfire,” said Mike Ford, Northeast Nevada Interagency Fire Management Officer. “We are providing this opportunity for the public to learn how we operate and also educate on how to prepare for wildfire season and how to ensure future success in surviving wildfires.”

Smokey Bear will be on hand throughout the event for photos and to remind everyone about fire safety.
