Snow Creek Fire Update

Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013

Size:  1,119 acres
Percent Contained:  90%
Resources:  1 helicopter, 1 water tender, 2 engines, 1 Type 1 hand crew, 1 Type 2 hand crew
Total Personnel:  58

The 1,119-acre Snow Creek Fire, located in the Goshute Canyon Wilderness 60 miles north of Ely, Nev., is 90-percent contained with full containment expected by this evening.

Firefighters today are mopping up the fire area and finishing rehabilitation of the fire line.  Demobilization is anticipated to begin at the end of this operational period to make firefighters available for fires elsewhere in the West.

First reported on August 8, the fire burned mixed conifers and mountain mahogany just within the wilderness boundary.  Firefighters, aided by aerial resources and the weather, prevented the fire from spreading outside the wilderness and toward nearby ranch structures and sage grouse habitat.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District has been assisted by the Forest Service, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and local private contractors.
