BLM Seeks Your Comments on Wildland Urban Interface Project
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District is seeking public comment on the Winz Creek Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Project scheduled for implementation in the Winz Creek area on the west side of the Wilson Creek Range, about 25 miles north of Pioche, Nev., in summer 2008. The 14-day public comment period ends at 4:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, 2007.
The 500-plus acre project will help protect life and property in Winz Creek from catastrophic wildfire by thinning pinyon-juniper to create a 500-foot wide buffer on three sides of the community. Trees would be removed by hand crews or machine. The trees could be piled and burned, or shredded and left or moved off-site, depending on the treatment method selected. The project meets criteria established by the Healthy Forests Initiative and implements strategies outlined in the National Fire Plan.
To receive a copy of the preliminary categorical exclusion (CX) or to provide comment, contact Kyle Teel, BLM Ely District fire ecologist, at the BLM Caliente Field Station, PO Box 237, Caliente, Nev., 89008, or call Teel at (775) 726-8117.
