Availability of Newmont South Operation Area Project Amendment
Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Elko Field Office prepared a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (DSEIS) to further analyze the cumulative effects of the Newmont Mining Corporation’s South Operations Area Project Amendment in Eureka County, Nevada, and would like public comment.

BLM prepared the DSEIS in response to a decision by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in August 2006 that found BLM’s analysis of some of the cumulative effects of the SOAPA project insufficient. The Ninth Circuit otherwise upheld BLM’s environmental analysis, rejecting all of the other arguments made by Great Basin Mine Watch and the Mineral Policy Center, who filed the legal challenge in 2002.

The DSEIS is available on line at http://www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/elko_field_office/blm_information/nepa.2.html or go the BLM Elko Field Office home page, click on Programs, click on Planning, and then scroll down to Newmont Mining Corporation's South Operations Area Project Amendment Draft Supplemental DEIS (posted 8/30/07). You may also obtain a hard copy by contacting the BLM at 775 753-0200.

Public comments on the DSEIS will be accepted during a 60-day comment period ending October 31, 2007. Comments may be mailed to BLM at 3900 East Idaho Street, Elko, NV 89801, or faxed to (775) 753-0255.

For questions or information about the SOAPA Project or the DSEIS, contact Deb McFarlane at (775) 753-0200, or 3900 East Idaho Street., Elko, NV, 89801.
