Summer Firefighter Job Fair Scheduled for Wells
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will host a Job Fair at the Wells High School Computer Lab, 1129 Lake Avenue, Wells, Nev. on December 21, 2005 from 2 pm until 5 pm.
Applications for summer seasonal firefighting and dispatching positions for the 2007 fire season must be submitted online. BLM fire staff will be on hand to help people apply and computers will be available as well. Applications must be submitted no later than January 9, 2007 to receive first consideration for Nevada BLM locations.
“Summer fire fighting jobs are very popular,” said BLM Elko Assistant Fire Management Officer Jeff Arnberger. “The benefits include earning money for college or travel and gaining experience with the federal government that will help go into a BLM job other than fire. Plus it’s a great job – working outdoors, traveling the West, and constantly changing work assignments and settings. Our firefighters routinely pay a year’s college expenses with what they earn in a summer.”
“We’re recruiting for positions on engine crews at stations in Elko, Carlin, and Wells, positions on the Ruby Mountain Hotshot hand crew, and the Elko Helitack Helicopter firefighting crew,” Arnberger continued. “Government housing may be available at these stations depending on location. Salary for these positions ranges from $8.63 to $14.65 per hour depending on experience, with a normal term of employment from June 1 through mid-September.”
Selected applicants must complete a pre-employment drug screen and physical examination prior to appointment, and are subject to random drug screen testing during their period of employment. Selected applicants for primary firefighter positions must also pass the “pack test” after entering on duty. This test consists of a 3-mile walk over flat terrain carrying a 45-pound pack in 45 minutes or less.
Additional Job Fairs will be held December 28, 2006 and January 4, 2007 at the BLM Field Office in Elko. For more information about fire jobs call the Elko BLM Fire Information Hotline at 775-753-0301.
