Expires: 9/30/2013
To:                   Montana/Dakotas Leadership Team
From:               State Director
Subject:           Request for Vegetation Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring Data                                                                                                        First DD: 5/7/2012; Ending DD: 9/30/2013
Program Area: All Program Areas
Purpose: This IM is to request vegetation, assessment, inventory, and monitoring data examples within Montana/Dakotas Bureau of Land Management (BLM).  Examples of field forms from any program that collect any vegetation data are being requested.  If your program has a field form that has vegetation as a fillable field, please submit a copy of that form.  The current list of forms that were gathered at the SO level are:
Multiple Indicator Method (MIM)
Proper Functioning Condition (PFC)
Soil Vegetation Inventory Method (SVIM)
Measuring and Monitoring Plant Populations (Tech Ref. 1730-1)
Seeds of Success (SOS)
Rare Plant Clearance Form
Indicators of Rangeland Health
Ecological Site Inventory (ESI)
Natural Resource Inventory (NRI)
Biological Soil Crusts – Ecology and Management (Tech Ref. 1730-2)
If your office is collecting vegetation information in a format not listed above, please follow the submittal request below.  Also, the format in which your office organized this data is being requested (i.e., Access Database, case files, allotment files, or specialist's files).

Policy/Action: This request is to gather examples of the types of vegetation monitoring that are being collected across the Montana/Dakotas BLM in all program areas. At this time, only one example of each type of vegetation monitoring is needed. The following are examples of how to submit your information.

1.      Photocopy examples of your monitoring and send them to Wendy Velman (MT923) in
an interoffice transmittal envelope    OR
2.      Scan examples of your monitoring data and save them to this folder on the share drive:
N:\MTUSERS\Vegetation Monitoring Examples where the N:\ drive is \\ilmmtso3fp1
                  a. Use the following naming convention: FOname_Program_monitoring_type
                      (examples: MCFO_Botany_rare_plant_clearance;
3.  Send a link to your monitoring databases to wvelman@blm.gov   OR
4.  Send an email to wvelman@blm.gov with a list of how you store your monitoring
Timeframe: Information is due by close of business May 7, 2012.  Information gathered by 5/7/2012 will be used in an information gathering session on 5/10/2012 with USGS and MT NHP. All other information will be gathered and used through the life of the project.
Budget Impact: The budget impact is minimal.
Background: The initial intent for this data request is to establish what data is available to create a more accurate vegetation cover map to support the Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) and the Montana Natural Heritage Programs available data layers. This effort is the first in Montana/Dakotas to establish a protocol for data collections and evaluation across all land ownerships in the states for a comprehensive vegetation map layer. This information will also be used to evaluate Montana/Dakotas monitoring efforts in correlation to the Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) strategy for the Bureau, see attachment.
Manual/Handbook Sections Affected: None.
Coordination: This IM was coordinated by the Branch of Planning and Biological Resources (MT923).
Contact: If you have questions or need further guidance, please contact Wendy Velman, Botanist, at (406) 896-5032.
