BLM: Stop wildfires before they start

MILES CITY, Mont. --- This year’s cool wet spring is giving way to warmer, drier conditions and Smokey Bear and Montana/Dakotas wildland firefighters would like to remind everyone to use caution while recreating on public lands.

For those who are camping over the 4th of July weekend, remember to extinguish campfires properly with water and dirt until coals are cool.

No fireworks allowed on Public Lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management.  Exploding targets and luminaries with open flame are also prohibited on Public Lands.

In communities where fireworks are allowed, remember to be safe during the holiday. Keep water and a shovel nearby in the case of a mishap.

Anyone who causes a wildland fire intentionally or through negligence will be held accountable for damage and suppression costs.

To report wildfires, contact your local fire department, sheriff’s office or the BLM Interagency Fire Dispatch Center at (406) 233-2900.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. In Fiscal Year 2015, the BLM generated $4.1 billion in receipts from activities occurring on public lands.
