BLM Firefighters to Train in Ekalaka Hills Area

The Bureau of Land Management will be hosting Rookie Camp this year in the Ekalaka Hills at Camp Needmore on the Sioux Ranger District, approximately 5 miles south east of Ekalaka May 23 through May 28.

This week-long class will instruct new fire fighters how to safely fight wildland fires, both locally and nationally. There will also be a prescribed fire conducted on BLM land near Camp Needmore as an educational aid for this school and to meet post-logging sale resource objectives.

The public should expect increased traffic from rookie school attendees in the area as well as some smoke from the prescribed burn.

For more information call BLM Fire Operations Supervisor Ryan Sundberg at (605)797-4506 or the Miles City Interagency Dispatch Center at (406)233-2900.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. In Fiscal Year 2015, the BLM generated $4.1 billion in receipts from activities occurring on public lands.
